The wearable industry needs to stop making things up
Optihealth Group founder Graham Gordon on integrity over gimmicks in consumer wearables, and why a wrist cannot measure body age.
Your wrist can’t measure “body age.” Stop pretending it can.
Optihealth Group founder Graham Gordon on integrity over gimmicks in consumer wearables
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, 22 September 2026. The wearable industry has an honesty problem, says Graham Gordon, Co-Founder and CEO of Optihealth Group. Too often, algorithmic estimates such as “body age,” “biological age” or longevity scores are dressed up as physiological facts. Wrist sensors measure what they measure. They do not measure everything about ageing. Pretending otherwise is a gimmick, not intelligence.
Gordon’s standard is blunt. Measure what you can measure. Estimate what you can reasonably estimate, and call it an estimate. Show the signals, the trends, and how someone compares with their own personal baseline. Never pretend the data knows more than it does.
“After twenty years in tech and digital health, I’m done with wearables that dress up estimates as facts. Measure what you can measure. Call estimates, estimates. Compare people to their own baseline. That is the standard we build at Optihealth Group.”
Graham Gordon, Co-Founder and CEO, Optihealth Group
“The issue is not whether algorithms have a place in wearables. They do, including in Thrive. The issue is whether people can tell the difference between a sensor reading and a calculated interpretation of that reading.”
“A number does not become a physiological fact because it appears on a polished screen. If a result depends on assumptions, those assumptions matter. If confidence is limited, that matters too.”
Raise the standard of health intelligence
Gordon argues the category does not need more novelty scores. It needs more intellectual honesty. Show people what changed for them. Compare them to their own baseline, not a marketing claim dressed as science. When confidence is limited, say so.
That frame sits behind Thrive Health Band, Optihealth Group’s Australian-founded wellness wearable. Thrive is built to learn what is usual for each person, connect sleep, recovery and activity with the habits they log, and explain what is changing in plain language. Then just Ask Thrive.
Thrive brings together a band, the Thrive app and the My Health web portal. Wearable readings sit alongside the everyday context people add, including meals, mood, energy and symptoms. Its personal baseline develops as more information becomes available.
People can ask, “What seems to affect my sleep?” or “How has my recovery changed?” The purpose is to help them understand their own patterns and consider something useful to do next.
That also means recognising the limits of a pattern. Two things changing together does not automatically explain why either changed. A demanding week, disrupted sleep or a change in routine can all add context. The answer should reflect what is known and what remains uncertain.
“Integrity beats gimmicks. Measure what you can measure. Estimate and label the estimate. Patterns over theatre. Personal baseline over made-up ages. That is the bar we build to.”

Launching with World Gym Australia
Alongside its direct-to-consumer launch, Thrive is launching with World Gym Australia, which has more than 60 clubs across Australia.
The rollout into participating clubs brings that approach into everyday training. Through Thrive Loops, members can choose to share selected information with their personal trainer, connecting sleep, recovery and daily habits with the strength programs and training plans their trainer creates.
For trainers and members, the aim is a more useful conversation about progress: what has changed, what else was happening and what might be worth adjusting. Sharing remains controlled by the member.
